An agent at work · Video editor
From raw footageto a finished edit.
The Video editor is one of the agents in Zaela. It edits existing video entirely in code: cutting, titles and motion graphics, transitions, colour, sound, captions and export. It watches every clip before the first cut, and watches its own result back before you get it.

The method
This is how the Video editor edits a video.
-
01Goal and research
First the goal, then the cut.
Which platform, ratio and length? Which message, audience and style? If something is missing, it asks. Then it thinks through what would make this particular video the best: the hook, the rhythm, the story structure and the conventions of the platform. For short-form video, it follows a dedicated reel method.
-
02The material
Everything on the table first.
It takes stock of all the material: the videos in your working folder, brand assets from Zaela’s shared memory such as logo, fonts and colours, or a link you give it. It only uses material you have the rights to, and it works on copies, never on your originals.
-
03Watch
It watches before it cuts.
Every video goes through Zaela’s video analysis tool: frames with the timecode in the file name, the metadata and a word-level transcript. It reads the frames and the transcript until it knows what happens where, in every source. It chooses how closely to look, from a quick first glance to a frame every second.
-
04Edit plan
The whole structure before the first edit.
It draws up a blueprint: the storyline from hook to core to close, which segment from which source with in and out timecodes, the pacing, the transitions, titles and where they sit on screen, captions, music, colour and the final format. Only when the plan stands does it start.
-
05Edit in code
The right tool for each task.
It writes and runs the code for the plan. If ffmpeg can do it in one command, it uses ffmpeg. Layered edits go to moviepy or movis, brand-exact animated titles to Remotion or HyperFrames. It protects quality: no needless re-encoding, stream copy wherever possible.
-
06Watch back
Nothing leaves unseen.
At the end it rereads your original brief and turns it into a checklist. It runs the video tool on its own output, reads the frames around every cut and checks sync, captions, crop, colour and sound. Every problem gets a timecode, a fix and a new render, until every point is ticked off.
This page is based on the agent's instructions and knowledge in Zaela. The drawings are illustrations.
What it pays attention to
What it pays attention to.
- 01
A cut is often enough
Less is more: a hard cut is usually the best transition. An effect that distracts from the message is wrong, however good it looks.
- 02
Hook first
On social, the strongest second or two come first. It starts in the middle of the action and cuts dead air, ums and long pauses.
- 03
Captions you can read
The font size scales with the height of the video, never a small fixed size. Wide margins and line wrapping, so nothing falls off the screen.
- 04
The last word stays
No sentence loses its last word, on screen or in time: a caption stays until the last word has been spoken, with a moment to read it.
- 05
Sound is half of it
Clean, balanced and normalised: loudness on the platform’s target, music ducked under speech, no clipping, no noise.
- 06
Correct first, then grade
First a neutral, correct image, then a look. Skin tones stay natural, and every shot is matched to one reference.
Teamwork
Who it works with.
Creative generator
When a shot exists nowhere, it gets a precise spec, and the result is edited in.
Motion studio
For heavier motion work, such as graphics that track the footage, or a reel animated entirely in code.
Music studio
For original music under the edit: a track, a jingle or a sonic logo.
Tools it uses
- Video analysis: frames, timecodes, transcript
- ffmpeg
- moviepy and movis
- Remotion, HyperFrames and Motion Canvas
- Manim
- PySceneDetect
- OpenCV and Pillow
What it never does.
- Generate new images or AI video itself. That goes to the Creative generator, and only as a last resort.
- Start cutting blind, before the goal, all the material and the structure are clear.
- Make up what is in a video. It only knows what it saw in the frames and read in the transcript.
- Deliver without watching the result back against your brief.
- Cut off a caption, or the last word of a sentence.
- Use material you have no rights to.

What you get.
reel_v1_9x16.mp4The finished video
MP4 with H.264 and AAC by default, or what the platform requires, with a clear name that includes ratio and version.
edit planThe edit plan
For bigger edits: the structure with timecodes, segment by segment.
.srt · .assCaptions and building blocks
Subtitle files, clips and assets, wherever they are useful.
notesWhat it did and checked
Which points of the brief it ticked off, what it found in review and fixed, and the settings: codec, ratio, fps, bitrate and caption style.
video_info_frames/What it saw
The frames and the transcript land next to your video, so you can see exactly what it looked at.
